Explain the reasons due to which globalization is resisted.
Globalization is a very contentious subject that has invited a lot of criticism. The reasons due to which globalization is resisted are:
● The critics feel that globalization has led to a phase of global capitalism that has made the rich richer and poor poorer.
● It has led to the beginning of the state and reduction in its capacity to protect the interest of the poor.
● It has reduced the concept of self-reliance and protectionism.
● In cultural aspects, it is said that globalization will harm the people and they will lose their old age values.
● Many anti-globalization movements are also formed. These movements are not against globalization but opposed to a specific program of globalization which they see as a form of imperialism.
● In 1999 at the World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting there were many protests at Seattle alleging unfair trade practices by the economically powerful states.
● It was argued that the developing countries were not given sufficient importance in the global economic system.
● The world social forum is also another global platform which brings a wide collection of human right activist, environmentalist, youth, labour, and women activist opposing globalization.
● The resistance of globalization in India has come from different quarters.
● These protests to economic liberalization are voiced through political parties and forums like the Indian social forum.
● The entry of multinational companies was resisted by the protests organized by trade unions of the industrial workforce and the forums representing the interest of the farmers.
● The cultural influences of globalization were also resisted including the availability of foreign TV channels and westernization of the dress.
