What is an atom? How do atoms usually exist?

The building blocks of all types of matter is called atoms. An atom is the smallest and indivisible part of an element that can take participate in a chemical reaction. Atoms of majority of the elements are very reactive and do not exist in the free state (as single atom). They exist in combination with the atoms of the same elements or another element.
