Can we conclude from the interference phenomenon whether light is a transverse wave or a longitudinal wave?

Interference experiment only proves that light has a wave nature in addition to particle nature. It does not tell us the kind of displacement the wave has as interference is shown by both longitudinal and transverse waves.
