How did the British succeed in securing the submission of the rebel landowners of Awadh?


A widespread popular rebellion developed in the region of Awadh in particular. The villages took to arms and the landlords led them.


1) The victories against the British had earlier encouraged rebellion, the defeat of rebel forces including landowners of Awadh encouraged desertions.


2) After the defeat of the rebel forces, the British had a two-pronged strategy to suppress the rebels and the rebellion.


3) On the one hand they tried and hanged the rebels leaders who challenged their authority and could do so again in the future.


4) On the other hand, The British also tried their best to win back the loyalties of the people. They announced rewards for those who would remain faithful to them.
