The earth is acted upon by gravitation of Sun, even though it does not fall into the Sun. Why?

Earth is not stationary in its orbit. It is a constant state of revolution around the sun. The gravitation pull of sun acting on earth is sufficient to keep it in a circular motion around it centripetal acceleration.
