(a) In a tabular form, differentiate between ethanol and ethanoic acid under the following heads:

(i) Physical state (ii) Taste (iii) NaHCO3 test (iv)Ester test

(b) Write a chemical reaction to show the dehydration of ethanol.

(a) The difference between ethanol and ethanoic acid is following:

Parameter

Ethanol

Ethanoic acid

(i) Physical state

(ii) Taste

(iii) NaHCO3 test

(iv) Ester test

Ethanol is liquid in state.

The taste of ethanoic acid is burning bitter.

Ethanol doesn’t reacts with Sodium hydrogen carbonate.

A sweet smelling ester is formed when ethanol ethanol is warmed with some glacial ethanoic acid and a few drops of conc. Sulphur acid.

Ethanoic acid is liquid in state.

The taste of ethanoic acid is Sour.

When Ethanoic acid reacts with NaHCO3, there is evolution of CO2 gas with brisk effervescence. The reaction involved is as follows:

CH3COOH + NaHCO3CH3COONa+CO2+H2O

A sweet smelling ester, ethyl ethanoate is formed when ethanoic acid is warmed with some ethanol and few drops of concentrated Sulphur acid.

(b) The chemical reaction to show dehydration of ethanol is as follows:

When ethanol C2H5OH is heated with excess of concentrated H2SO4 at temperature of 170oc, it is dehydrated and resulted in formation of ethane.
