Substitution reaction

The reaction in which one of the atoms of a compound is substituted by another is called substitution reaction. Consider the following example:

CH₄ + Cl₂→ CH₃Cl + HCl (in the presence of sunlight)

In this example, one of the hydrogen atoms of methane (CH₄) is replaced by a chlorine atom.
