What did Liberal Nationalism stand for?


The term Liberal is derived from the Latin word ‘liber’ which means free. The understanding of the term Liberal Nationalism stands for a different meaning for different people.

• For new middle class, Liberal Nationalism stood for individual’s freedom and equality before the law.


• In the political sphere, it was based on the concept of government by consent.


• After the French revolution, Liberal Nationalism stood for the end of an autocrat, clerical privileges, a constitution and a representative government through Parliament.


• In the economic sphere, Liberal Nationalism stood for freedom of markets and the state-imposed taxes should be abolished on the movement of goods and capital.
