Compare the following

(i) Wavelengths of the incident solar radiation absorbed by the earth’s surface and the radiation re-radiated by the earth.

(ii) Tanning effect produced on the skin by UV radiation incident directly on the skin and that coming through glass window.

i) Wavelengths of the incident solar radiation absorbed by the earth’s surface are much smaller than that of the radiation re-radiated by the earth as the energy received from sun has a very broad spectrum containing the visible rays, the UV rays , the infrared rays having higher frequencies and thus smaller wavelengths.

ii) Tanning effect produced on the skin by UV radiation incident directly on the skin is much more than when it is coming through glass window because when the radiation is incident on the glass, some part it gets reflected and some gets transmitted so the intensity of the UV radiation reduces.
