Name and define the three types of social movements.
Sustained collective action directed against the state demanding changes in the state policy or practice is called social movement. The following are the three types of social movements:
a. Redemptive Social movements
b. Reformist Social movements
c. Revolutionary Social Movements
a. Redemptive Social Movements:
Redemptive social movements are launched to bring about a change in the actions and consciousness of the individual members of a particular group or community. For example, Narayan Guru led the Ezhava community of Kerala to bring some changes in their social practices.
b. Reformist Social Movements:
The Reformist Social Movements aim to bring about a change in the existing social and political arrangements gradually. Right to Information campaign is the best example of Reformist Social Movement.
c. Revolutionary Social Movements:
These Revolutionary Social Movements aim at the radical transformation of social relations, mainly by capturing the authoritative power. The Bolshevik Revolution of Russia is the best example.
