Both Robichon and Quinquart were comedians. They had been working as comedians ever since they joined theatres, and the public was accustomed to seeing them doing comic roles. However, if they continued to act in a comic role for their suitor ship competition as well for winning the hearts of Paris and Suzanne, there would be nothing fresh and the audience would not be able to judge them any differently. So, in order to prove their versatility, they mutually decided upon playing solemn part in their acts.
