Which are the voluntary functions of the local governments?

Local governments are closest to the people, and represent true decentralisation of democracy. These governments are also most involved in bringing development to the doorsteps of the people. They take up responsibility to maintain the city, its infrastructure and its culture, and in keeping with this, they perform certain voluntary functions like:

1. Maintaining public spaces – ensuring that street lights function well, playgrounds are well maintained, green belts are maintained etc.

2. Organising events – the local bodies organise and manage fairs, flee markets, exhibitons, road shows and festivals

3. Maintenance of amenities like parking spaces and cattle sheds, for fostering healthy business environment.
