Write a note on Tipu Sultan.

Tipu Sultan, also known as “Tiger of Mysore” was the son of Haidar Ali who ruled from 1782 to 1799. Under the rule of Haidar Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, Mysore became a powerful city. The company purchases pepper and cardamom from the Malabar Coast which was under the control of the Mysore. The export of sandalwood, pepper and cardamom through the ports was discontinued by the Tipu Sultan. Also, he stopped merchants to trade with the company. By establishing a good relationship with the French who were ruling in India at that time, he was able to improvements in his army.

Britishers became alert due to the growing power of Haidar Ali and his son Tipu Sultan whom they considered as ambitious, arrogant and dangerous. They wanted to suppress them, so four battles were fought and it was only in the last battle called Battle of Seringapatam, the British were able to defeat them where they killed Tiu Sultan who was protecting his capital Seringapatam. After this, Mysore was given to the Wodeyars, the former ruling dynasty. Britishers also imposed a subsidiary alliance on the state.

NOTE – Tipu Sultan acquired the title called ‘Tiger of Mysore’ because once he fought with the tiger and killed him with the dagger while he was hunting in the forest with a French friend. This might be a story and considered that this is the reason he had the image of the tiger on his flag.
