What was the role of the Planning Commission?

The Planning Commission was instituted to provide requisite support for promotion of industrial and technical growth in the country. Since the government had opted for a mixed economy, the Planning Commission was required to come up with the requisite distribution of resources between the State and market, and accommodate local concerns.

The commission directed the government to lay stress on heavy industries and building dams in the initial decades.
