If x = a and y = b is the solution of the equations x -y = 2 and x+y = 4, then the values of a and b are, respectively.

Solving the equations -

x - y = 2 and


x + y = 4;


adding them,


2x = 6


x = 3;


subtracting them,


2y = 2


y = 1;


so, a = 3 and b = 1 is the solution of the equations.
