What are sieve elements?

The sieve elements are parts of the phloem. They are of two types, sieve cells and sieve tubes. Sieve cells occur in gymnosperms and pteridophytes. The cell walls are perforated. They have cell plates. In angiosperms sieve tubes occur. They are connected to each other to form a channel. They are meant for translocation and conduction of food material.
