Q7 of 12 Page 11

Explain how latitudes and longitudes help to locate the position of a place on a globe.

● An imaginary line running on the globe divides it into two equal parts. This line is known as the equator. The northern half of Earth is known as northern hemisphere and southern half as southern hemisphere.

● Through the angle of the Pole Star from your place, one can know the latitude of the place. Therefore, equator acts as an imaginary circular line that becomes a reference for a place’s location on Earth.

● The prime meridian 180⁰ divides the earth into two equal halves.

● The grid is formed by latitude and longitude, the grid of the parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude on the globe. Location of any point on the globe can be very easily known if latitude and longitude are known.
