Give two reasons why Thar is a desert.

Thar desert (Rajasthan) lies on the leeward side of the Aravali mountain range and thus receives lesser rainfall. Desert lies in the trade winds belt which blows from the northeast in northern hemisphere and south-east in the southern hemisphere. Winds blow from east to west. So these winds shed their moisture on the eastern margins of the continents and by the time it reaches the west, they have lost moisture. Being in the area of descending air, the air becomes warm and compressed which increases its moisture holding capacity.
