Q1 of 13 Page 27

How did the permanent settlement give rise to landlordism?

Permanent settlement system was introduced by Lord Cornwallis in the year 1793 in Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and North Madras.

1. A big landowner was given charge of a land area from where he would collect revenue and pay the Britishers.

2. The land was taken from the farmers and landlords were given perpetual and hereditary rights over the land.

3. The land revenue to be paid to the British was fixed and could not be changed.

4. Since the tax burden on land was fixed, investment in land became an attraction for zamindars and landlords.

These factors contributed to the rise of landlordism in the society.
