Q4 of 6 Page 77

What would be observed on adding 5% solution of alkaline potassium permanganate drop by drop to some warm ethanol taken in a test tube? Write the name of the compound formed during the chemical reaction. Write a chemical test to identify this compound.

When 5% solution of alkaline potassium permanganate is added drop by drop to some warm ethanol taken in a test tube then oxidation reaction takes place, and ethanol is converted to acetic acid.

When ethanol reacts with the acetic acid, then esterification reaction occurs in which formation of an ester takes place which has a fruity sweet smell. Esters are used in making perfumes and flavouring agents. Formation of the ester is a chemical test for acetic acid.
