Describe any four methods of farming which heralded the Green Revolution. Write one harmful effect of the green revolution.

The green revolution was heralded due to the following reasons -

a. Construction of canals and development of tube wells for facilitating irrigation for the cultivation. This helped the farmers to extend the area of cultivation and lessen their dependency upon monsoons for irrigation purposes.

b. Introduction of a high yielding variety of seeds which could sustain on less water and were more resistant to most of the crop diseases.

c. Introduction of farm machineries and availability of easy loans from the government banks for tractors and threshers which enhance faster ploughing and harvesting.

d. Availability of cheap chemical fertilizers promoted cultivation and good harvest to the farmers.

Harmful effects of green revolution were that overuse of fertilizers turn the soil infertile and also polluted the ground water. Excessive irrigation led to the increase in salinity and aridity of the soil.
