Q9 of 32 Page 2

Find remainder when f(x) = x3 + 4x2 – 9x + 10 is divided by (x – 2).

Concept Used:

Remainder theorem: If a polynomial f(x) is divided by (x – a) then f(a) will give the remainder.

Explanation:

f(x) = x3 + 4x2 – 9x + 10

f(2) = Remainder when f(x) is divided by (x – 2)

Therefore,

f(2) = (2)3 + 4(2)2 – 9(2) + 10

f(2) = 8 + 16 – 18 + 10

f(2) = 16

Hence, 16 is the remainder when f(x) is divided by (x – 2).
