The role of government in the public sector can be enumerated as below:

1. Welfare of the people: The focus of the public sector is always on public welfare, unlike the private sector which focusses on maximizing profits. Services like railways, post office, are run by the government to ease public life.

2. Large expenditure: Some activities like construction of roads require large sums of money which cannot be borne by a private company. So the government takes up the fulfilment of these tasks.

3. Support of government: There are some activities that require support from the government in the form of subsidies such as the provision of foodgrains for the poor.

4. Duty of the government: It is the people who elect the government, and thus it becomes the duty of the government to work towards raising the standard of living of people. It should make arrangements for education and health facilities for the welfare of people.
