Why are multipurpose projects facing resistance? Explain with examples. (CBSE 2010, 2013)

Multipurpose projects are facing resistance due to the following reasons:

1. Multipurpose projects require a large area for their establishment. In order to build dams, it is necessary to displace people living in that area. Multipurpose projects have led to large-scale displacement of the communities residing at the place.

2. The local communities not only have to give up their homes but also their source of livelihood.

3. Multipurpose projects are facing resistance because surveys show that the local people are not being benefited from it.

4. They create hindrance in the natural flow of water.

5. The water collected in multipurpose projects reduce the soil fertility.

6. Examples of this resistance against multipurpose projects are movements like Narmada Bachao Andolan and Tehri Dam Andolan.
