What were Chawls? (CBSE 2013, 2014)

Chawls were the multi-storeyed structures which were found in Bombay in the 1860s.

1. Many people took refuge in the same room, having no other option.

2. There was a lack of toilet facilities, and people had to use public toilets often.

3. There was a space constraint, and hence mundane activities like washing clothes and bathing took place outside the vicinity of the chawls.

4. This led to the creation of an unhygienic ambience.

5. People regularly met downstairs and discussed various issues, laws and political actions.

6. In the space between some chawls, Nandi Bulls, Snake charmers, wrestlers, etc. entertained the residents.

Hence, we can assume that the living conditions were poverty-ridden.
