Why is plasma membrane called a selectively permeable membrane?

Plasma Membrane is the outermost covering of the cell that separates the contents of the cell from its external environment.Plasma Membrane only allows/permits the entry and exit of some materials in and out of the cell while not allowing the entry of materials which are not required by the cell hence Plasma membrane is called selectively permeable membrane.
