Write any three causes for the decline of the Portuguese power India.

Like other European countries, the Portuguese also established their power in India. They were the first one who discovered a new route to India. The 3 causes for the decline of the Portuguese power in India are as follows:-

• The successors of Albuquerque who was the second viceroy of Portuguese power in India were considered to be weak and incapable. They failed to strengthen Portuguese power in India.


• The religious policy of Portuguese became the major cause of their downfall in India. They forcefully converted the people of Christianity. They destroyed Hindu temples in India and generated hatred for Muslims.


• The Portuguese maintained friendly relations with the Vijayanagara Empire in the south. When Vijayanagara kingdom defeated in the battle of Talikotta, it greatly affected the Portuguese power in India. The fall of Vijayanagara Empire weakened the Portuguese power in India.
