What startled the doctor within minutes?

The doctor was startled suddenly by a strong flash of light, one following another. The bright light made by the explosion caused him to doubt that the old stone lantern was lit by the Magnesium flares. Due to the sudden explosion, the walls and roof of his house fell down and he was thrown out into the garden.
