Does the narrator know what exactly has caused a suffering of such magnitude? Why/Why not?

Probably, he might know that the war has caused all those destruction and pains. In the opening lines, the narrator debated that the roof was lit by magnesium flakes. Magnesium flakes are used in the war. It is an anti-war poem and the poet presents the horrific pictures of death and destruction in the lines.
