Miss Edla Williamson is the eldest daughter of the owner of the Ramsjo Ironworks. She is not at all pretty, but she seems to be modest and quite shy. She possesses all the good qualities in human nature. Miss Williamson has great persuasive power. Even her father acknowledges it. Edla brings many changes in the paddler. Love and affection can change any type of person. Edla brings out man human goodness in the peddler. Life appeared very sad and monotonous to the paddler, and the world was very mean towards him. But Edla changes his character. He is a different man now. She persuaded the peddler to come to the manor house. She interceded for the peddler when her father threatened to call the sheriff. She insisted on keeping the guest. Her love and understanding left their marks on the peddler’s heart. He raised himself to a gentleman. He left 30 Kroners to their rightful owner. He even left a letter and a Christmas gift for Edla.

Sophie and Jansie are class-fellows and friends. They belong to lower middle-class families. Jansie understands her limitations well. She knows that they both are unmarked for the biscuit factory. But Sophie is totally opposite of her. She is blind to the harsh realities of life. She dreams of big and beautiful things. She has big dreams. She wants to have a big boutique. She also has a dream of becoming an actress. She loves to be nice, grand and sophisticated. All her dreams are beyond reach. Sophie and Jansie are poles apart in thinking. Sophie is lost in herself and in her dream world. She is an incurable escapist. She adores the young Irish footballer Danny Casey.
