Ahmedabad got its first textile mills in 1859. Due to several locational advantages it became the second largest textile centre in India surpassed only by Mumbai. This earned it the moniker ‘Manchester of India’. The locational advantages enjoyed by Ahmedabad are as follows –


• It is located in the state of Gujrat which is known for its cotton production.


• The region has a well-developed rail and road network.


• The Mumbai port is near the area.


• Naturally present warm and humid climate.


• The city is in the plains making development of factories easy.


• A steady supply of labour is available due to the dense population of the region.
