Distinguish between small scale and large-scale industries.

Industry belongs to this secondary sector and is involved with the production of goods, extraction of minerals and/or the provision of services. There are various manners of classifying industries as they vary on the basis of raw materials, size and ownership. On the basis of size there are two types of industries, small scale and large-scale industries and the difference between them have been tabulated below.

Large scale Industries



These industries employ smaller percentage of people and require lesser capital for operation.



These industries are both labour and capital intensive.



Rudimentary technological input is made and production is highly dependent on handwork and simple tools and machines.



These industries are technologically very advanced and needs skilful operation of large machineries.



Production is low in these types of industries.



These industries have high production rates to meet mass demand.



Mostly develops in rural and semi urban areas and are found in a scattered pattern within urban areas.



Mostly found in urban areas and often leads to development of urban areas surrounding the industry to satisfy demand for manpower.



Examples include – Cottage industries like


basket weaving, pottery and other handicrafts, silk weaving and food processing industries.



Examples include – Production of automobiles and heavy machinery.
