What is Preamble? Explain any four guiding principles enshrined in the Preamble to the Indian Constitution?

The preamble is an introductory statement in a Constitution, which states the reasons and guiding values of the Constitution. The Preamble is the soul of the Indian Constitution, which contains the philosophy on which the entire Constitution has been built.

The major guiding principles/ideals enshrined in the Preamble to the Indian Constitution are


(i) We the people of India The Constitution has been drawn up and enacted by the people through their representatives and not handed down to them by a king or any outside power.


(ii) Sovereign People have the supreme right to make decisions on internal as well as external matters.


(iii) Socialist Wealth is generated socially and should be shared equally by society.


(iv) Secular Citizens have complete freedom to follow any religion.


(v) Democratic A form of government where people enjoy equal political rights, elect their rulers and hold them accountable.
