Show how would you join three resistors, each of resistance 9Ω so that the equivalent resistance of the combination is (i) 13.5 Ω, (ii) 6 Ω?

(a) Write Joule’s law of heating.

(b) Two lamps, one rated 100 W; 220 V, and the other 60 W; 220 V, are connected in parallel to electric mains supply. Find the current drawn by two bulbs from the line, if the supply voltage is 220 V.

Given: Three resistors, each of resistance 9Ω

The objective of the question is to arrange the resistor in such a way that the equivalent resistance of the circuit is equal to following values,

(i)13.5 Ω

If we arrange the two resistors in parallel and the third resistor in series, the equivalent resistance of the combination will be equal to 13.5 Ω.

The equivalent resistance of the parallel combination of the two resistors is given by,

Rp=

As per question,

R1 = R2 = R3 = 9 Ω

Rp=

Therefore, upon substituting the value of R1 and R2 in Req, it is equal to 4.5 Ω

Now, the equivalent resistance of the combination is a series combination of Req and

the third resistor,

Req = Rp + R3 = 4.5 + 9 = 13.5 Ω

(ii)6 Ω

Similarly, If we put 2 resistors in series, parallel with the third resistor, the equivalent

of the resultant combination will be equal to 6 Ω.

The series combination of two resistor is equal to, Rs = R1 + R2 = 9 + 9 = 18

The equivalent resistance of the entire combination is a parallel combination of Rs

and R3, that is equal to,

=

OR

(a) Joule’s law of heating explains the amount of heat generated due to current within a wire, its mathematical expression can be explained in following cases;

(i) It is directly proportional to the square of current for a given value of resistor and for a fixed period of time,

(ii) When the heat dissipated is proportional to the resistance for a given current and for a fixed period of time,

(iii) It is directly proportional to the time for which the current flow across the resistance,

When all these conditions are merged together, the resulting expression for heat dissipation is,

(b) Given: Two lamps, let’s say A and B, with following power and voltage rating are given;

Lamp A: Power Rating = P = 100 W; Voltage Rating = V = 220V.

Lamp B: Power Rating = P = 60 W; Voltage Rating = V = 220V.

We need to determine the current drawn by the bulbs from the line, if the supply voltage is equal to 220V.

As we know the power dissipated by a bulb is a product of voltage and current, so it can be written as,

So the current drawn by the bulb from the 220V supply is equal to,

For bulb A,

Similarly, for bulb B,

Hence, the voltage drawn by bulb A and bulb B from the line is equal to 0.45 A and 0.27 A, respectively

Students in a school listened to the news read in the morning assembly that the mountain of garbage in Delhi, suddenly exploded and various vehicles got buried under it. Several people were also injured and there was traffic jam all around. In the brain storming session the teacher also discussed this issue and asked the students to find out a solution to the problem of garbage. Finally they arrived at two main points– one is self management of the garbage we produce and the second is to generate less garbage at individual level.

(a) Suggest two measures to manage the garbage we produce.

(b) As an individual, what can we do to generate the least garbage? Give two points.

(c) List two values the teacher instilled in his students in this episode.
