Functions of an ecosystem- Ecosystem functions are natural process or exchange of energy of various plant and animal communities of the world. It is the distribution and circulation of the organic and inorganic matter within an ecosystem. Mainly ecosystem functions are the exchange of energy and nutrients in the food chain. This help to sustain plant and animal life on earth and also help the decomposition of organic matter and production of biomass. The function of the ecosystem depends upon the pattern of the energy flow. In the food chain, each organism gets energy from another one in a hierarchical order. These levels are called trophic level. A system of the interlocking and interdependent food chain is called a food web.
