Arrange a debate in the class on the advantages and disadvantages of urbanization.


Urbanisation refers to the concentration of population and its social, cultural and economic activities in different cities.


The advantages of urbanisation are:



1. The people living in urban areas earn more due to better availability of jobs.


2. It helps to increase the labour productivity.


3. The people living in urban areas have better access to public health and general health care facilities.


4. Urban areas provide better sanitary services such as portable water sanitation, recycling of waste etc.


5. The urban areas provide the people better chance of social and cultural integration.


6. The people face a lower cost of losing a job because it will be easy for him to find another one in a shorter duration.


7. Urban areas provide better education centres, social services and cultural activities.


8. Cities have better means of transport and communication which makes the movement easier.


9. The availability of resources and labour from the urban areas leads to the development of the manufacturing and services.



The disadvantages of urbanisation are:



1. Migration of people from the rural to urban areas has increased over years. This has lead to negative impact on the environment and the quality of life.


2. The pollution in cities have increased due to the traffic.


3. The price of housing in urban areas is extremely high.


4. There is also a positive relationship between the crime and the size of the city.


5. Due to the overload of population the movement on roads and bridges increases. This leads to a fall in the infrastructure.


6. Everyone is cramped in a small space, there is a reduction in the airflow which leads to humidity in the weather.


7. The energy is not adequate all the people living in the area. So the people resort to illegal electricity connections and inefficient cooking fuels.


8. With increase in the population the fresh water becomes expensive. So, some of the people resort to taking water from the nearby streams which can cause diseases.


9.The cities with high population face a huge issue of garbage management.
