What is the significance of age-structure?

Age structure represents the composition of population in different age groups which acts as an important indicator of population composition in a country. It allows us to study the intricacies present in the population of a country. A country with a high ratio of population in the age group of 15 -59 years indicate a large working population. Similarly, a country with high percentage of young population indicates a high birth rate active in the country. A country with low birth rates indicated by a lower population composition in the young age groups and a high percentage of elderly people in the above 60 years age group often indicate a stagnant population.
