Why is sex ratio in the world unfavourable to women?

Sex ratio is the ratio between the number of women and men in the population. In India it is calculated as the number of females per thousand males in the population. It is one of the major indicators regarding the status of woman in any country. Most of the time the sex ratio in the world is unfavourable to women which reveals the rampant gender discrimination that exists the world. Reasons behind unfavourable sex ratio towards women include –


• Preference for male children which leads to female infanticide and neglect of females.


• High infant mortality rates which are often higher for the female gender.


• Low social, economic and political status of women in the society.
