Q20 of 26 Page 1

I) How will you convert the following:

a) to

b) Aniline to phenol

c) Ethanenitrile to ethanamine

II) Write the chemical equations involved when aniline is treated with the following reagents:

i) water

ii)

iii) HCl

I) a) to

The conversion can be carried out by using Hoffmann bromamide degradation reaction using NaOH and .

b) The conversion of Aniline to Phenol takes place via the formation of diazonium salt in the presence of and HCl which takes place at 273-278 K. Then thus formed diazonium salt is reacted with water at 373 K which yields phenol.

c) The conversion of ethanenitrile to enthanamine takes place by the reduction step using in presence of ether and water.

II) i) Aniline with water

Aniline in presence of Bromine and water forms 2,4,6-Tribromoaniline and HBr.

ii) Aniline with

When aniline reacts with Chloroform and KOH, it forms phenyl isocyanide.

iii) Aniline with HCl

Aniline upon reaction with forms Anilium and Chloride ions respectively.
