Why did the neighbours kill the dog?

On hearing the good fortune of the old farmer and his wife, the greedy neighbours borrowed their dog to make him find old in their field. The dog being scared of the cold couple neither eat nor moved. On much coaxing the dog dug out a dead kitten. The furious couple killed the dog out of frustration.
