Q26 of 44 Page 1

What is a multi-party system? How has multi-party system strengthened democracy in India? Explain.

The multi-party system has several parties competing in the elections and more than two parties have a chance to get a majority. These parties can win either on their own or by making alliances.

The multi-party system has strengthened democracy in India by:

1. There are numerous parties in India apart from major ones like Congress and BJP. This has enabled representation of many groups as well as regions as some parties are stronger in one area than others.

2. Division of votes has caused numerous parties to come together and form alliance or fronts to win elections like the United Progressive Alliance or Left Front.

3. Since many central governments in India have been coalitions, the small parties of various regions also get to be part of the central government. This helps in incorporating diversity.

4. This system has ensured that a variety of interests and opinions are addressed and voiced because of the numerous parties that contest elections.

Note:

India is a land of diversities in terms of language, culture, religion, and region. The multi-party system has helped not just in representing the diversity of the country but also in taking care that no single party gets all the power.
