They are considered to be remains of a much larger planet which broke up due to gravitational effect of Jupiter. These are small in size. The size of an asteroid may vary from barely a kilometer to a few hundred kilometers. Ceres is the largest known asteroids. Its diameter is 633 k and it was discovered in 1801. There are about 100,000 asteroids.
