Explain the ways in which glucose is broken down in absence of oxygen.

Glucose is oxidized in the following ways:

a. In cytoplasm, glucose is oxidized to pyruvate and release energy.


b. In muscles of humans i.e. under anaerobic conditions pyruvate breaks down to lactic acid and release energy.


c. In yeast i.e. during fermentation process pyruvate converts to ethanol, carbon dioxide along with it releases a certain amount of energy.
