The novel Indulekha revolved around the hotly debated issue of marriage practices of upper-caste Hindus in Kerala, especially the Nambuthiri Brahmins and Nayars.


NOTE – Indulekha, written by O. Chandu Menon and published in 1889, became the first modern novel in Malayalam. A love story revolving around Suri Nambuthiri, Indulekha, and Madhavan, the writer wanted his readers to appreciate the values portrayed by the hero and the heroine and criticize the ignorance and immorality of Suri Nambuthiri.
