Q9 of 21 Page 1

Why didn’t Valli want to go to the stall a have a drink? What does it tell you about her?

Valli had thriftily saved whatever stray coins came her way, resisting every temptation to buy peppermints, toys, balloons and the like, and finally she was able to save sixty paise. She had even resolutely stifled a strong desire to ride the merry go round though she had the money, all because she wanted to save money for a bus ride. The entire ride had already cost her sixty paise and she was not left with any money to afford a drink. This is why Valli didn’t go the stall to have a drink.

We learn the dedication and the willingness to carry out her dream despite very limited financial resources. Valli is honest and humble in refusing to take the drink from the conductor. She doesn’t want to live her pleasures by accepting the offerings of others. She will spend as much as she can afford to do.
