The narrator had confidence in his ability to write a ghost story. In fact, he was able to give Jenkins a story whenever he asked for it. He felt that ghost stories specialized in him. But the ghost undermines his faith by telling him that she had often leaned on his shoulder to give him ideas and that he asked for her help quite often to write a ghost story.
