Q2 of 16 Page 125

What are the limitations of electrical impulse as a means for stimulus-response?

Limitations of electrical impulses as a means for stimulus-response are:

i. Cannot reach every cell-

They cannot reach each and every cell of the animal body. They are only limited to the cells that are connected by nervous tissue.

ii. Time-consuming-

• The electrical impulse is once generated and transmitted to the cell to perform a certain task.

• There is a need for a continuous supply of the electrical impulse in order to complete the specific task.

• To regenerate the electrical impulse, the mechanism has to be reset again.

• This generation and regeneration of the electrical impulse are time-consuming.

• It also means, Cell cannot continually create and transmit electrical impulses. In short, they are quite short lived.
