Why are industrial wastes neutralized before releasing into the water?

Industrial wastes are neutralized before releasing them into water bodies as a means to reduce water pollution. Industrial wastes contain harmful and toxic chemicals which mix with the water if discharged untreated. The acidic wastes will kill the animals living in the water bodies. These toxic chemicals adversely affect aquatic life. It serves as a serious threat to mankind as households also receive harmful and polluted water.
