Q1 of 12 Page 10

What are the factors responsible for the shortage of fresh water?

Only 2.5% of the total water available on Earth is freshwater. Out of this, only 1% is available for human use. Following are some factors that lead to the depletion of this resource:

1. Overexploitation of water sources like lakes by industries.

2. The releasing of untreated toxic industrial waste leads to the pollution of water.

3. The increasing population and increased the demand for freshwater.

4. The use of fertilizers and pesticides pollute the water table, and runoff from these fields sometimes even pollute the water bodies.
