How is it possible to skate on ice without leaving a trail behind?

The trail may become faint but is always present. When the skater skates on ice it has to overcome the static frictional force. This leads to release of energy that heats up the ice and ice melts. Hence a trail is formed behind. But this again freezes because of ice and air temperature.

One may try to make the trail fainter by reducing the friction in the skates or by freezing the ice again by some refrigeration unit.
